Association football
Association football, commonly known as football or soccer, is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. It is the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field of grass or green artificial turf (manufactured from synthetic fibers made to look like natural grass, first introduce in 1980 at some association football clubs in Europe), with a goal in the middle of each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms, while the field players typically use their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition. The Laws of the Game were originally codified in England by the Football Association in 1863. The laws have been substantially changed since that time, to such an extent that the game played today bears little resemblance to that of the 1860's. Association football is governed internationally by FIFA, which organizes the FIFA World Cup every four years.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA)
The International Federation of Association Football commonly known by the acronym FIFA is the international governing body of association football, futsal and beach football. Its head quarters are located in Zurich & Switzerland; Current president of FIFA is Sepp Blatter. FIFA is responsible for the organization & governance of football’s major international tournaments most notably the FIFA World Cup, held since 1930. Nineteen editions of the FIFA World Cup have been held so far.
FIFA World Cup
The FIFA World Cup (also known as the Football World Cup, the Soccer World Cup, or simply the World Cup) is an international association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War. The current champions are Spain, who won the 2010 tournament. The current format of the tournament involves 32 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation or nations over a period of about a month – this phase is often called the World Cup Finals. A qualification phase, which currently takes place over the preceding 3 years, is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nation(s).The 19 World Cup tournaments have been won by eight different national teams. Brazil have won five times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament. The other World Cup winners are Italy, with four titles; Germany, with three titles; Argentina and inaugural winners Uruguay, with two titles each; and England, France, and Spain, with one title each. The World Cup is the world’s most widely viewed sporting event; an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany. The next three World Cups will be hosted by Brazil in 2014, Russia in 2018, and Qatar in 2022.

The Golden Ball award
The Golden Ball award is presented to the best player at each FIFA World Cup finals, with a shortlist drawn up by the FIFA technical committee and the winner voted for by representatives of the media. Those who finish as runners-up in the vote receive the Silver Ball and Bronze Ball awards as the second and third most outstanding players in the tournament respectively.
The Golden Boot award
The Golden Boot or Golden Shoe Award goes to the top goal scorer of the FIFA World Cup. It was introduced at the 1930 FIFA World Cup. If there is more than one player with the same amount of goals, the tie-breaker goes to the player who has contributed the most assists. If there is still more than one player, the tie-breaker goes to the player who has played the least amount of time.
The Golden Glove award
The Golden Glove Award is awarded to the best goalkeeper of the tournament. Before 2010, the award was named the Yashin Award in honor of the late goalkeeper Lev Yashin (USSR). The FIFA Technical Study Group recognizes the top goalkeeper of the tournament based on the player’s performance throughout the final competition.
The Best Young Player award
The Best Young Player award was awarded for the first time at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and given to Germany's Lukas Podolski. The award is given to the best player in the tournament who is at most 21 years old. For the 2006 FIFA World Cup this meant that the player had to have been born on or after 1 January 1985. The election took place on FIFA's official World Cup website with the help of The FIFA Technical Study Group.
FIFA Fair Play Trophy
The FIFA Fair Play Trophy is given to the team with the best record of fair play during the World Cup final tournament. Only teams that qualified for the second round are considered. The winners of this award earn the FIFA Fair Play Trophy, a diploma, a fair play medal for each player and official, and $50,000 worth of football equipment to be used for youth development.
The Most Entertaining Team award
The FIFA Award for the Most Entertaining Team is a fairly new accolade for the FIFA World Cup. It is a subjectively awarded prize for the team which has done the most to entertain the public with a positive approach to the game. The award is always organized through public participation in a poll.
